Hi shawn,
well according to the service people after hooking up a diagnostic to it.
the flashing s3 indicates the soliniod is shorting out by pieces of metal,
indicating that service is required.
and its a gamble to do 'road trips' with.

I really tried to go for a flush and clean/or replace the soliniod, but the
mech. strongly states that 'that route can fix it for a short while' but
does not
attack the heart of the problem. so to do a 500$ tranny half-assed service
was discouraged.

I suppose the real trouble could happen ( as I discussed with the mech. ) is
that on the hwy the tranny/sol could 'short' and
drop you down a gear or two and blow your engine ( sounds very dangourous
too me / them ).

I'm getting mine fixed, though I feel like I'm buying my own car. ( only
about 3-4k value in my mind )
( I dont want to risk my/others lives over 2000$ ( which is the max, they
indicated it could be 'only' half as much, I'll let you know ) )

If the tranny solenoid is shorted, then it there are two possibilities you
really should check out before investing $2000. First off, a piece of metal
can "stick" or lock up the solenoid but that piece of metal CANNOT short it
out. The coil for the solenoid is not contacting the tranny. Sometimes
pieces of metal can get caught up in the solenoid and block it. What you
need to do is get the codes from the tranny computer on the Integra. Look up
what the codes are. If the tranny solenoids are stuck, generaly you can
clear them after you get them off the car by carefully violently knocking
them to loosen them up. Chances are your screens are also clogged and need
cleaning. It is not a huge job, and may tranny people scare customers into
big buck repairs that are not necessary. By the same token, I bet you were
never told to get your tranny changed with honda atf every year either or
ignoored it. If you're lucky, a couple hours work and you're ok that's all.

There's also the possibility of just the vehicle speed sensor that is going,
but check for the codes that flash on the computer

I found the S3 Codes in Chapter 14 Of the Helms manual. Now I just
need for the light to come on again and count the blinks. In the
meantime, I'll think I'll spend the $94 for the flush - its long
overdue. While I'm getting that done, I'll have the mechanic check the
diag codes. Isn't the last code saved, even though my S3 light is no
longer blinking? I'm not real excited about taking the front panel of
my dash off to get to it ...
